House of Lords

Lords of Appeal in Ordinary, commonly known as Law Lords, were judges appointed under the Appellate Jurisdiction Act 1876 to the British House of Lords, as a committee of the House, effectively to exercise the judicial functions of the House of Lords, which included acting as the highest appellate court for most domestic matters, including patent cases. The abbreviation "UKHL" is used for legal citations.

History

The House of Lords lost its judicial functions on 1 October 2009 when the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom was established. The replacement was deemed necessary on the grounds that the separation of powers of the House of Lords should be more explicit.

Powers

The Law Lords heard appeals related to patents from:

  1. Court of Appeal (England and Wales)
  2. Court of Session (Scotland)
