Z4 v. Microsoft and Autodesk (2006, USA)
z4 sued Microsoft and Autodesk for infringement of a patent on use of software product activation codes.
Microsoft was ordered to pay US$115 million in April 2006. At this point, Autodesk settled out of court.
Microsoft's fine was later increased to US$142, and finally settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.[1] Microsoft had asked the US Supreme Court to review an aspect of the case but this procedure was cancelled when the litigation was settled out of court.
